Südwind has honoured Faramarz Mohammadi, a human rights, social and anti-war activist from Iran with a Special Award for his lifetime contribution to promote human rights, and change the things that cause people to be disempowered, persecuted and killed in Iran. During his sustained engagement he provided financial assistance as well as all other forms of support assistance (employment and housing assistance) to political refugees and families of political prisoners to escape the country or to move inside Iran. During the Iran and Iraq war Faramarz Mohammadi distributed medicine among deprived villagers and supported families afflicted by the war. Due to these activities he had to leave his home city. He also participated in setting up the Iranian Political Prisoners Support Society inside the country. He has been arrested several times over his political and human rights activism. He survived execution due to his appearance before the Montazeri commissions in 1984. In January 2010, he was summoned and arrested on charges of participating in demonstrations on Ashura Day in 2010. After 55 days of solitary confinement and regular incarceration, he was released on bail. In 2011, he was summoned to the Branch 15 court under Judge Salavati, and then sentenced to four years of incarceration on charges of spreading propaganda against the regime – which after the objections by the defending attorney was decreased to two years. In 2011 and 2012, he was declined to answer a summons by telephone via the Evin prison prosecutor. In October 2012, Faramarz Mohammadi was hospitalized due to advanced stomach cancer, which also leads to spinal cord and bone damage; thereupon, medical documents were sent to the Tehran court in order to declare him incapable of enduring penalty, due to illness.
