Oral statement on upcoming elections in Iran (GD Item 3)

During the Agenda Item 3 of this council different thematic Special Rapporteurs and working groups reported on different aspects of human rights which are related to the right of a free and fair election. On June 14th 2013, the last day of 23rd Human Right Council Session, the IRI, one of the few countries worldwide massively violating human rights, conducts another not free and not fair election. In the entire history of the IRI and in 11 presidential elections no single woman, even those who accept discriminatory laws and rules had the chance to run for the candidacy. Barring women from running for the election shows the grade of discrimination against women and is a clear violation of article 2 and 3 of covenant on the civil and political rights. Regarding peaceful gatherings, increasingly numerous parties and groups, even those close to governmental organs are prevented from any public activity. Two presidential candidates from the last presidential elections in 2009 are in the third year of their house detention without any trial. Many of their supporters are imprisoned. Even for the upcoming elections the members of the campaign of one the candidates are currently in jail. In addition the police announced that their forces would prevent any kind of demonstrations and gatherings in support of the candidates. In the previous presidential elections the civil society activists had managed at least to place their demands through some of the candidates. These activists are currently under massive political oppressions and they have been denied from any right of gathering to articulate their demands. Milad Panahi Pour, Farzad Eslami, and Saidollah Bedasthi supporters of one of the candidate are arrested three days ago and since two nights solitary confinement in section 240 of Evin prison. We would appreciate if the thematic special Rapporteurs and working groups regarding elections would follow the upcoming presidential elections. We would furthermore like to use the opportunity and thank sincerely for the news release of the thematic special Rapporteurs and working group on discrimination against women published on the elections.
