Mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran renewed for the third consecutive year.

Fri 22 03 2013

The United Nations Human Rights Council’s renewed today of by a vote of 26 in favour, 2 against, and 17 abstentions the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran for the third consecutive year. The Draft Resolution A/HRC/22/L.22 – “Situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran” was submitted by Sweden, USA, Panama, Republic of Moldova, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Sweden`s Mr. Jan Knutsson welcomed the report and the work carried out by the Special Rapporteur Seyed Mohammad Rez Sajjadi and introduced the resolution to extend the mandate. The country mandate received today four more votes in favor than last year. Only Venezuela and Pakistan spoke out against the extending of the mandate, claiming politicization and double standards in the Human Rights Council and rejecting it due to their general oppose of country resolutions and mandates on countries. But the government of Pakistan has serious deficiencies in their standards for human rights at home. Also President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have inaugurated a gas pipeline. The pipeline is seen in Pakistan as a way of alleviating the country’s chronic energy shortages. An alliance has been formed between Iran and Venezuela since 2001. Südwind welcomes the adoption of the draft resolution. Today´s vote strengthen the international pressure on Iran to address its human rights violations and to cooperate with the Special Rapporteur.
